Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), also known as lowlevel laser (light) therapy (LLLT) has been well studied and is used clinically to treat a wide range of conditions including androgenic alopecia. Many devices have received market clearance for the treatment of androgenic hair loss and to promote hair growth in men with Hamilton-Norwood IIa-V and women with Ludwig-Savin I-II classifications of hair loss, with both possessing Fitzpatrick I-IV skin types.
A widely accepted theory is that PBMT, particularly at wavelengths in the red (visible) range, affects the functioning of the stem cells that cause hair growth.
